THE SCIENCE OF BREATHWORK

​Within PSYCHEDELIC BREATH® you are experiencing shifts on all dimensions, and a non-ordinary state aka deeper states of meditation. A part of it is regulated by a change in your brainwaves. During intense breathwork, we shift from a so-called beta wave, that we usually experience during the daytime, into slower waves such as alpha, theta and sometimes gamma waves.


Here is an overview:

+ BETA WAVES: normal day activity, attentive, thinking, making decisions, problem-solving - but also if in high frequency, feeling agitated, stressed, tense, afraid or obsessive

+ ALPHA WAVES: relaxed, reflective, aware and in the present moment (meditative / massage state)

+ THETA WAVES: deeply relaxed, we are open, intuitive, and receptive (hypnotic state). Deep insights or aha movements beyond our normal conscious awareness. This can occur in breathwork, deep meditation or in sleep

+ DELTA WAVES: Our slowest brain waves - mostly in deep dreamless sleep where we lose body awareness

+ GAMMA WAVES: Heightened perception and consciousness

TRANSIENT HYPOFRONTALITY…

OR HOW TO SILENCE THE INNER CRITIC

 

Breathwork has been shown to temporarily slow down the prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain is usually very active during our wakening state. It allows us to analyse and question our behaviour, to plan and structure. But high activity can also lead to over-thinking and blaming yourself.

Effects of temporarily slowing down the pre-frontal cortex:

+ silencing the ‘inner critic’

+ feeling of being fully immersed in the now

+ brainwaves move from beta to alpha-theta - this is where gamma waves can occur - connecting memories, ideas from different areas of our brain, new stimuli for creative actions

I am a certified Psychedelic Breath Teacher, Yoga Breathing Coach, Yoga & Meditation teacher and entrepreneur. In a previous life, I worked in Luxury & Fashion Marketing in the UK for 15 years, transitioning into Mind-Body Wellness in 2016.
